Christians and Social Media

Many Christians are taking a wait and see approach to social media. It is unclear to them if social media is something a Christian should be using. When it comes to making decisions in anything you do it is best to look to Corinthians 10:31 which instruct us that all we do should be to the glory of God.

What Others Do

The biggest challenge a Christian faces when electing to participate in social media is that there are others using it with less than honorable intentions. Because of this it is important for you to be cautious of how you set up your profile and who you allow to see it. It is best to keep to a private setting and have a small network of friends and family so you can share updates, wish each other well and stay in touch without fear of strangers viewing them. You can put social media to good use as long as you are very careful.

Envy and Conceit

It is interesting to note that studies have shown that those who participate regularly on social media can suffer from two very undesirable characteristics: envy and conceit. Pride plays a big role when using social media and often those who wish to brag or show off use these sites. You must question your motives and make sure you are not seeking glory for yourself. Bragging, wishing people to see your photos and admire you and indulging in actions that are self promoting are not really within the realm of a Christian lifestyle. Be certain you are not using social media to bring attention to yourself but are instead using it to share love and encouragement with friends and family.

Written in Stone

Remember that you are posting information, images and comments that will be written in stone. It will be very hard to recover from postings made in the heat of the moment or that portray you in an unflattering or sinful way. Social media can lead to terrible temptation and can allow you to lash out and make comments in a cowardly manner. Many people forget there are just as many consequences for their actions on social media as there are when dealing with someone face to face.
