The Need for Effective Monitoring Tools
Monitoring programs are an important tool for a company to make use of. With the right tools, a system administrator can stay aware of important details about important equipment and infrastructure. The use of it will make keeping track of the status of equipment in the data center infrastructure much easier. The most important thing is to maintain continuity of service. With effective tools, downtimes on servers and other equipment will be greatly reduced. This will save money, and improve the quality of service that the company is able to provide to its customers.
Increased Productivity
With a monitoring program constantly keeping track of the status of infrastructure equipment, failing equipment can be detected much more quickly. This means that failing equipment can be repaired more quickly, possibly before any outside users or customers even notice any problems. Polling results can allow a system administrator to possibly predict problems that may occur in the future by analyzing the database. These problems can then be averted before they even develop. Some issues can even be prevented automatically by the program as well, by restarting hosts or services without human involvement. If there is any system failure serious enough to require repair by IT staff, the program will make the repairs easier and cut down on the length of time required for a shutdown fix. Either way, even a minor failure or interruption in delivery of service to customers can mean complaints and financial losses. That is a big reason why using effective monitoring tools is so important.
Environmental Monitoring
With racks upon racks of servers and other equipment densely packed together, the need to monitor environmental conditions becomes critical. Heat is one of the bigger threats faced in a data center. Humidity is another factor that must be monitored constantly. Room sensors may not be enough to detect one or two servers overheating. Sensors should be placed amongst the racks as well to keep track of heat and humidity. These tools can alert staff to problems with temperature and humidity before permanent damage is sustained. The data that is collected by the program can be analyzed by the system administrator to design the most efficient layout for the racks. The data can also be used to identify problem areas where additional blowers and/or air conditioning might be needed.
