Tips on Seeing a Dentist in Dorchester for Dental Implants
People who have lost teeth due to medical issues, injury or because of poor dental hygiene know how difficult it can be to be missing teeth. It can affect many areas of their life, from the way they eat their foods to how they laugh at a joke.
One of the most popular ways for many people who are faced with tooth loss to have their problem treated is with dental implants. Dental implants are a form of Cosmetic Dentistry that can replace the lost teeth with a dental prosthesis that not only looks real but also feels real.
Dental implants come in two different types. Endosteal implants are implants that involve the placement of a metal rod directly into the bone where it fuses with the jawbone to create a foundation that is sturdy and strong. A dentist will then be able to affix a dental prosthesis such as a crown, denture or bridge to the implant and this can create a set of teeth that will not move about in the mouth.
Endosteal implants can often be the best type of implants for a patient with a good deal of bone mass in their jaw. Unfortunately, many people begin to lose bone mass when they suffer tooth loss. If the bone loss is too severe, the dentist will be unable to place the rods into the jawbone. In these situations, the dentist may recommend that the patient have subperiosteal implants instead.
A subperiosteal implant works in much the same way as an endosteal implant except that rather than placing the metal rods in the bone, they are placed on the bone. This is done through the construction of a form-fitting frame that is designed specifically for the patient’s jawbone. Rods are attached to the frame so that they rest atop the jawbone. This can create the same sturdy foundation for the replacement teeth. Both treatments can restore a person’s smile in a way that is quite comfortable and natural as well.
