He accepted a small cigar factory as part of a debt settlement and, with the aid of his brothers, turned it into a ”manufactury” that, by 1870, was producing hundreds of cigars every day. By 1895, Swisher owned three factories, employed more than 1,000 people and was producing around 300,000 cigars a day.

Swisher was always innovative and was one of the first to perfect machinery for making good quality cigars. The company’s expansion continued and, by 1924, their cigars were amongst the best selling in the US; their Swisher Sweet Little Cigars were first introduced in 1958and rapidly went on to sell in multi-millions of units; not only on the domestic market but virtually anywhere in the world where cigars are smoked.
