Whether you are decorating your home office or an office in a professional setting, choosing functional, fabulous office furniture can be tricky. You want pieces to look nice but functionality is key if you are to use this office furniture on a daily basis. It does not serve you well to select beautiful office furniture if it is uncomfortable or made poorly.

First, you must decide what style furniture would be best suited to your particular setting. Do you need modern, clean lines or are you looking for a homier feel? Do you prefer a contemporary or traditional look? You must also consider whether style or function is your primary focus. Of course, ideally you will find a bit of both in whatever choices you make, but sometimes you must choose which is your biggest deciding factor. Another factor to consider is whether you are willing and able to handle assembling your own furniture or not. It can save you a bundle if you are able to do it! Make a list of your needs and take it with you to the office furniture store. Consider the space you will be placing the furniture and have measurements handy. If won’t help if you buy a desk that is too large for the office or a chair with rollers if you will be using it on thick carpet. Keep such factors in mind when you are shopping.

When choosing a desk, it is important to consider the work that will be done. Is the employee going to be sitting for extended periods of time? If so, take a seat in the chair and see if everything is within reach. Make sure that leg space underneath is comfortable and roomy. Is there room for all the computer components, phone, office supplies and other items necessary for the job with additional room for workspace?

With regard to the chair, there are many factors involved to choose the right one. The seat height should accommodate the desk you are considering. The width and depth of the seat should accommodate many sizes and shapes of individuals who might be using it. There should be a good back support. The seat should be covered in a material that is comfortable and smooth, keeping in mind temperature of the office where the chair is placed (no one wants to sit on a cold chair or one that makes them sweat!)

Keep in mind that now days, many office furniture pieces have multiple uses. This will save space and often makes the space look tidier. If you find a piece of office furniture with multiple uses, consider whether it will work best for your employees. Will several people be using this piece of furniture? Sometimes multiple-use furniture pieces won’t work well if several people will be crowding around it to perform tasks at the same time.

Whether you purchase furniture to assemble yourself or a pricey desk, chair and other components, buying office furniture is not as simple as you might think!
