Passengers in Accidents Can Trust in Attorneys When Injured in Port Charlotte, FL
Often, when accidents are mentioned, people envision two or more vehicles involved in a collision. However, serious injury can result from a single car accident in which one is the passenger. When passengers are injured, they have just as much right to consult with attorneys in Port Charlotte, FL as if they had been in a multiple vehicle accident.
A recent incident involving a Port Charlotte couple illustrates the fact that a passenger in a single vehicle collision can often suffer more serious injury than the driver. The Herald-Tribune reports that a woman has been hospitalized in critical condition and her husband faces DUI charges following an accident this past Friday night.
FL Highway Patrol reports that the vehicle that the man was driving left the road, went into a median, and hit a palm tree. The man allegedly backed up, continued driving, and was apprehended a quarter of a mile from the site of the incident. Reports state that palm tree detritus was still lodged in car. His female passenger was air-lifted to the hospital with critical injuries, while he suffered only minor injuries, and was charged with DUI with serious bodily injury, DUI with property damage, and DUI and careless driving.
Although in this bizarre husband and wife case it is highly unlikely that the woman even wants criminal charges brought against her husband, much less a civil case, the fact remains that she was seriously injured as the result of being a passenger in that vehicle. Had the driver been anyone else, she would most likely be discussing her case with attorneys as soon as she was physically able.
Passengers who are injured as the result of someone else’s reckless or negligent driving have just as much right to pursue restitution as victims in another vehicle when the accident involves multiple cars. Just because victims consented to be in the car with the driver does not mean that they gave consent to suffer serious injury at the hands of the driver. Often, as was the case with this man and wife, passengers are more seriously injured than the driver and face months, or even years, of painful and difficult rehabilitation.
