The pros and cons of breast implants

Breast enlargement or breast augmentation is usually done to increase a woman’s self-esteem. Breast implants are used for more reasons than vanity, they are an important component when reconstructing a breast which is deformed or has been removed due to breast cancer. Although breast implants in New York are quite common, there are some disadvantages which include recovery, which can often be quite painful. Although it rarely happens with modern breast implants, there is always the possibility of implant rupture and infection.

Breast implants are available in a wide range of sizes; this allows a woman to have a drastic change or just a subtle change in her dimensions. In many cultures, the US being one, large breasts are considered more attractive and contribute to finding a partner for life.

Often there is a need to remove one or perhaps both breasts, this is frequently the cure for breast cancer. This procedure, called a mastectomy is considered a necessity and as such is usually covered by medical insurance plans; this is not the case when breast implants are inserted for cosmetic purposes.

One major issue with breast implants in New York is the recovery which can be both painful and lengthy. During the recovery period, the reconstruction surgeon will advise the woman to limit her activities and do nothing than can irritate or aggravate the surgery. Depending on the circumstances of the surgery, this can last for a couple of weeks or longer.

All surgery where there is an incision made is potentially a problem due to infection. Although it is rare, implants have been known to burst; this of course is very serious and can lead to many complications. In most cases an infection can be brought under control but should the implant burst there is no other option but to remove the implant and start anew.

There is no hard evidence that a breast implant causes cancer or any other malady, but it is equally true that having an implant makes it more difficult to identify a tell tale lump which may indicate the presence of breast cancer. A breast implant also makes a mammogram more difficult.

A woman who has had breast implants must have regular examinations to identify any problems early so that they can be corrected. As the implants age, they become more delicate and in many cases, they have to be replaced after a period of time.
