If you are lucky enough to have someone in your family or friends that cares enough about you to work your event, you are sure to come out cheap this way. You never know, you may have an aspiring event planner right beside you and never know it until you ask around.
Another place to look for an affordable event planner would be your very own church. You may have someone at your church at is great at helping out with weddings and planning all sorts of church functions. If you can talk someone like this into planning your event, you will likely save a lot of money by doing it this way.
If you cannot find an event planner any other way, you can always take out an ad in your local newspaper outlining exactly what your needs are and exactly how much you would like to pay an event planner to do the job for you. One you get a few interested people calling you, you can set up interviews with each one to see which, if any, you are interested in hiring to plan your event. I would not recommend inviting strangers into your home however, so set up a central meeting place to talk business with your prospective event planner and you to discuss all that you need him or her to do for you.
